Orlando Pirates had two good chances in the opening three minutes, both with Mabasa running through on goal, but his first effort was cleared off the line by Ramahlwe Mphahlele, and his second was saved by goalkeeper Veli Mothwa in a one-on-one situation. Up to the half-hour mark when Hendrick Ekstein broke the deadlock for the hosts with a goal from the edge of the box during a breakaway. Hotto’s failed clearance cost Pirates. The ball fell perfectly for Ekstein and he fired a rocket into the net.Pirates started the second half brightly but it took a setpiece for them to finally take the lead. A well-worked move saw Kabelo Dlamini curl a left-footed effort past Mothwa.

In end-to-end attacks, Ekstein was unlucky not to make it 3-2 for Usuthu in the last 18 minutes with a shot clipping the crossbar and going over.
