Cape Town – The organisers of OppiKoppi have announced that there will be no festival this year. The event's cancellation was announced in a statement to the press by Matchbox LIVE CEO Theresho Selesho, on Wednesday. The statement attributes the cancellation to the crime wave that plagued 2018's festival.
In an effort to give festival fans hope Selesho promised in the statement that the festival would return in 2020. We are very happy about the evolution of the festival dynamics, which are changing at OppiKoppi. Although OppiKoppi has been going for 25 years, the audience is young and keeps changing. This was a very big decision for us.
For 24 years, OppiKoppi has been going great guns. Unfortunately, in 2018 we experienced the rampant crime currently impacting events and festivals across South Africa. For us to present the 2019 event with the increased security measures that are required to curb this crime to present a safe and enjoyable festival, the production costs also increase drastically.
