OPINIONISTA: Liberté, égalité, fraternité provide the core values of new party By KANTHAN PILLAY KanthanPillay

For many of us, there are pivotal events which trigger thought processes that lead to ideas that lead to action. For me, one of those moments came when I looked at this picture of this child. I was first devastated, then angry. I’m still angry.

My outrage around Lumka’s death was one of the first pieces of a puzzle that came together in June. I had lasted voted ANC when I put my mark next to Thabo Mbeki’s name in 2004 as I had done in 1999. I voted for Helen Zille in 2009 and Mamphela Ramphele in 2014. That’s an outrageous statement, so let me explain my thinking. If these people were competent, they would be able to step into employment in the private sector and earn as much as they do in Parliament as MPs. Ask yourself how many of our MPs are in a position to do that?

Today, 10 people in Parliament would be able to cover the most critical portfolio committees — Finance, Health, Education, Police, Trade and Industry, Public Enterprises, Energy, Public Service, Labour — while playing a watching brief over the other ministries as well.

OPINIONISTA: The people, the party and the state: A critical left perspective on the Venezuelan crisisSouth African and international lefties and progressives are right to condemn the imperialist manoeuvring of the US and defend the right of the Venezuelan people to decide their own political and economic future. However, the mistakes of the past should not be repeated, such as those in the case of Mugabe/ZANU-PF’s Zimbabwe, Ortega/Sandinista’s Nicaragua, Dos Santos/MPLA’s Angola or indeed, the ANC’s South Africa.

OPINIONISTA: From New Dawn to dust — the implosion of RamaphoriaThe ANC lists are evidence of the poisoned Nasrec chalice, of the fact that Ramaphosa’s Nasrec unity mandate should have been read all along not as building a united ANC under the banner of a cleaned-up party, but rather of an ANC that cannot clean itself up. BooysenS2 “Don’t build your house on a sandy land...” Or in Ramalier’s this case, dog shit.

OPINIONISTA: Plain packaging for cigarettes is a bad ideaAustralia adopted plain packaging for tobacco products in 2012, but it has made hardly any difference to smoking rates. It does, however, destroy valuable brand equity, expose consumers to lower-quality products, and stimulate the black market in counterfeit and untaxed tobacco. It also sets a dangerous precedent for other supposedly unhealthy products.

OPINIONISTA: Take note, Ebrahim Rasool, the Western Cape is the best-run province in the countryThe DA is not satisfied with resting on the success of the past 10 years; we know that there is still so much work to do for the people of the Western Cape. We will fight to grow our economy, fight for the right to have provincial rail service and fight for a professional and honest provincial police service. Alan...it was the best run city under Ebrahim Rassool AND was a lot better then than it is now!!!! U got time to smile for what Your privilege protects you from people seeing your failures. Mxm. But full of racist bosses, black people being underpaid and sometimes get chased away from public places such as beaches It’s like arguing that SA before 1994 was the best run country in Africa...

OPINIONISTA: VF+ not likely to succeed in challenging registration of BLFLast week South Africa’s Electoral Commission (also colloquially referred to as the IEC) announced that it will not prohibit the fringe group, Black First Land First (BLF), from contesting the upcoming election, despite the fact that its constitution makes clear that only “black” people are allowed to join the party. The Freedom Front Plus (VF+), a slightly larger fringe group who represents the interests of far-right 'white' voters, is challenging the legality of this decision. Some might say this is a match made in heaven. But what are the chances of the VF+ winning this legal battle?
