OPINIONISTA: 2019 Elections: Goldilocks scenario for business By Dirk Kotze

Most businesses and investors are hoping for a categorical ANC victory to give the country the certainty it needs to move forwardI think most people want to see a strong ANC, with a clear majority, so they don’t have to work with coalitions. There should not be any questions about who’s the government, who’s the decision-maker and who are the policymakers.

For the EFF, it’s important that it grows its reach: The EFF needs to expand beyond Gauteng because in a sense it is over-concentrated and needs to develop more of a national presenceThe party is also defined by the land issue and this election will show whether voters will give it the mandate.

With the youth constituting the majority of the South African population, it’s worrying that for this election, only 18% of all eligible voters in the 18-20 age category had registered to vote.Two-thirds of the population now live in urban areas – good news for parties like the DA that are stronger in the cities, but a potential issue for parties such as the EFF and the ANC who get the rural vote.

One of the questions that will be revealed by the election results is whether Ramaphosa can bring ANC support back towards the 60% mark. What is clear, from several opinion polls, is that he is actually more popular than the ANC. But the downside of this situation is that the voters are not going to vote for him, individually, it’s a parliamentary electionHis mere presence can play a role though. Some people, even non-ANC supporters, will see him as the person to lead South Africa out of the current situation.DM

2019 Elections - ANALYSIS: Curiouser and Curiouser – the strange case of the 2019 electionsThis has, by any standards, been a rather strange election campaign by the major parties. The ANC is riven with factionalism, the DA spends its time attacking other parties rather than putting its own message across, and the EFF is beginning to emerge as a force bigger than just one man, Julius Malema.

2019 Elections - Analysis: South Africa’s foreign affairs goes missing in action in the 2019 electionBoth candidates and parties have given short shrift to explaining their positions on South Africa’s crucial foreign and international economic policies, in the about-to-wrap-up national election. But these issues are too important to be left to a couple of lines in the parties’ respective manifestos. At the same time, however, the media may have let them all off far too lightly to address the needs of voters. There is a better way. parkhurst1 How about your own poor foreign corresponding with regards to Palestine? 'A weekend flare-up of violence following several rocket attacks from Gaza...'? What about the daily physical and structural violence inflicted on 2 million illegally imprisoned people? BDSsouthafrica

Elections 2019: It’s all a little below par | Elections | M&GCan President Cyril Ramaphosa bring traditional ANC voters back into the fold, despite the manifest flaws of his own party, and thereby give himself more political room for manoeuvre, to drive his reform agenda more decisively in government? Nothing new, same old lies except the vibrancy of EFF and its position on land and advancing black majority interests With elections boring is good. I'll take a boring election any day. The only party to include any semblance of policy on posters is the DA.

OPINIONISTA: 2019 election set to mark the end of an eraThe 2019 election is fraught with uncertainties and will probably signal the end of South Africa’s approximate two-party system. The Economic Freedom Fighters holds the hearts of a large, growing body of young voters — the electoral constituency of the future, and these elections are set to confirm that the EFF is here to stay. The party has passed the viability test that the ANC split-offs, the United Democratic Movement and Congress of the People failed.
