OPINION: China and racism: We too are not all the same | by Hongxiang Huang

I’m not writing this to defend anyone’s behavior and I certainly don’t represent China or its government, writes Let’s admit right up front that there are racists in China and let’s not pretend there wasn’t racial discrimination against Africans in Guangzhou - although recent events there were much more than just an outright expression of discrimination against Africans and black people: it was also a mixture of fear about Covid-19, the legal status of certain immigrants, miscommunication …...

He does not speak any English, has not been abroad , and has never actually met any non-Chinese people. As an educational social enterprise, our organisation China House has been promoting global citizenship education to Chinese youth. And from those exchanges and those personal interactions, it’s our hope that the students will be forever transformed by these encounters. Through these kinds of programmes and our"global citizenship curriculum", our students become more open-minded, learn how to listen and to ask questions, gain a firsthand appreciation that diversity, of all kinds, is something that should be respected not feared, and develop a new outlook as Chinese global citizens.
