Only a handful of independent candidates make it onto ballot after IEC vets lists

The general election on 29 May will see 14 662 nominated candidates contest for 887 seats in the National Assembly and the nine provincial legislatures.

Despite an overhaul in electoral law to allow independent candidates to contest the elections, only seven independent candidates qualified to contest for seats in the National Assembly, the Electoral Commission of South Africa said on Tuesday. to ensure independent candidates are catered for after the Constitutional Court ruled that they are allowed to contest the national and provincial elections.
