On 5 November 2016, Ireland beat New Zealand for the first time, with their victory in Chicago also snapping the All Blacks’ record run of 18 straight wins.

The thrilling Test at Soldier Field was organised to help promote rugby in the USA, and it proved a perfect showcase for the sport, as Ireland scored three tries in the first half to lead 25-8 at the break.

They extended their lead to 30-8 early in the second half, before the All Blacks fought back with three converted tries to bring the score to 33-29, but a late Robbie Henshaw try put the result to bed. The 40-29 win for the Irish, after 29 attempts since they first faced the New Zealanders in Dublin in 1905, was greeted with unbridled joy by the emerald green-and-shamrock-clad fans inside the packed stadium, while the All Blacks could only hold their heads in frustration.
