Nyandeni left out as Ellis opts for mix of youth, experience for Banyana at World Cup

Nompumelelo Nyandeni was the big omission on Friday as coach Desiree Ellis announced her Banyana Banyana squad for the Women’s World Cup in France.

Nyandeni, though, has lost out in midfield, where the likes of teenagers Karabo Dhlamini and Sibulele Holweni – who played in the Under-17 World Cup last year – made the cut instead, alongside the experienced Refiloe Jane and Leandra Smeda, among others. “We went with a lot of experience and included some youngsters, because we also have to think about the future.

Banyana will play one more friendly, against Norway in Amiens, France on 2 June, before starting their World Cup against Spain in Le Havre on 8 June.
