Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, said he regarded Russia's scaremongering as a sign of weakness. Russia had lost its “last hope to scare the world off supporting Ukraine”, Kuleba wrote on Twitter after Lavrov’s interview. “This only means Moscow senses defeat.” Lavrov said: “Nato, in essence, is engaged in a war with Russia through a proxy and is arming that proxy. War means war.”

Britain said all tariffs on goods coming into the country from Ukraine under an existing free trade deal will be axed and it would send ambulances, fire engines, medical supplies and funding for health experts to help the emergency services.Russia’s foreign ministry said on Monday that it had declared 40 German diplomatic staff “personae non gratae” in a retaliatory move after Berlin expelled the same number of Russian diplomats.

Ukraine’s general staff said on Tuesday that Russia’s offensive continued in the eastern Kharkiv region with Russian forces trying to advance towards Zavody.
