The National Student Financial Aid Scheme has announced it will increase students living allowances by 10%.NSFAS spokesperson Maduvha Maseda said the increase follows Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation Blade Nzimande’s agreement to the proposal that was put before him a few weeks ago.Nzimande convened the consultations which included inputs from the South African Union of Students .

“This is a significant development given the reality that in the past three years, no increment was made on student allowances. This is an effort not only to acknowledge the impact of inflation on students’ livelihood, but a contribution to ease the economic disadvantages suffered by students,” Maseda said.

University students criticise NSFAS accommodation allowancesUniversity students say government's funding body, NSFAS, is trying to save its own skin by introducing a R45,000 annual cap on accommodation allowances. R3750pm is rent for a 2 bedroom house. However, it does not seem enough for a single university student who only needs 1 room and kitchen. The absolute arrogance is unbelievable Students should not be used by this people who are benefiting from NFSAS… R45000 is way too much for student accommodation… this madness need to stop 🛑 The reduction of the accommodation allowance is senseless considering the fact that the government hasn't made any initiatives towards building state owned student residentials that can accommodate students on a low cost.
