Van Staden said the scheme made two upfront payments to all institutions — one that was disbursed on 31 January and another on 29 February 2024.The South African Union of Students has previously accused the scheme of “plunging the sector into instability and a crisis” by failing to pay student allowances.when the scheme had failed to pay more than 70 000 students their monthly allowances since May 2023 after it switched to a direct payment system.
“They thought the to-and-fro of data between universities and fintech companies many students not being paid because they fall in that space of either not yet having been admitted, but funded, or admitted but not yet funded,” Sishi said during Monday’s briefing.
