Shapovalov, who reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal with a 6-7 6-3 6-4 6-3 win over David Goffin, suffered the same fate as the Serb in a 2017 Davis Cup tie when he smashed a ball in frustration and it hit umpire Arnaud Gabas in the face. “Of course, he had no intentions to go after the lines woman. Thankfully she's okay. It could have ended up very, very bad. Hopefully Novak can shake it off and move on. I mean, of course, he needs to grow and learn from this. But it's super, super unlucky as well.”
