No nationalisation of Reserve Bank — ANC top six

Nationalising the Reserve Bank is “simply not prudent”, President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a statement on Thursday, after a meeting with the ANC’s top six officials.

“The Constitution… sets the role of the Reserve Bank as protecting “the value of the currency in the interest of balanced and sustainable economic growth.” It further through the cabinet minister responsible for national financial matters.“It is our desire for the South African Reserve bank to be publicly owned. However, we recognize that this will come at a cost, which given our current economic and fiscal situation, is simply not prudent.

The top six met to discuss the state of the economy, given the 3.2% contraction in the economy announced by Statistics South Africa on Tuesday, the sharpest decline in a decade.
