Cape Town – No one can explain definitively why the Western Cape’s Covid-19 death and infection rates are plateauing despite the further reopening of the economy and more people being out and about.

“The assumption is that there are a number of factors and the number of people who get infected was potentially overestimated in the original assumption. "The scientists really don’t know, and it is going to take time to find a credible answer. Case mortality and hospitalisation data have shown plateauing and early signs of reducing burden,” Cloete added.

“It is essential for us to ensure a strong focus on containment for the next 12 to 18 months,” he added.
