A tiger at New York's Bronx Zoo has tested positive for Covid-19, the institution said on Sunday, and is believed to have contracted the virus from a caretaker who was asymptomatic at the time.

The four-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia and her sister, Azul, two Amur tigers and three African lions all developed dry coughs and are expected to fully recover, the Wildlife Conservation Society that runs the city's zoos said in a statement.

"It is not known how this disease will develop in big cats since different species can react differently to novel infections, but we will continue to monitor them closely and anticipate full recoveries." Chinese disease control officials have previously identified wild animals sold in a Wuhan market as the source of the coronavirus pandemic that has infected well over one million people worldwide.

In late March a pet cat in Belgium was discovered to be infected with the novel coronavirus, following similar cases in Hong Kong where two dogs tested positive. The Bronx Zoo said preventative measures were in place for caretakers and all cats in the city's zoos.

New York in 'race against time' as Trump stresses face masks are voluntaryTwo of the principal US coronavirus hot spots - New York and Louisiana - reported their biggest jumps in Covid-19 deaths yet on Friday, as the White House sent mixed messages on whether Americans should cover their face if they venture outdoors. This guy is just not a damn president material, wish America goes down with this choice, probably the world will be at rest, while bracing for yet another beast that will emanate from Asia (China) This article is incorrect as New Yorks governor was encouraging people to congregate in groups and go to the movies. It’s governor led, and his actions were too slow. Trump also stated the necessity for mask use. Sloppy investigation here.
