Professor Mervyn Mer said the hospital’s ICU was full of Covid-19 patients, and that the new unit would increase capacity.

The Gauteng health department, the First Rand Spire Fund – which assisted with the establishment of the unit – and senior hospital staff revealed the new unit on Thursday, which is also fitted with modern intensive care equipment. “What this particular project has done is change the number of beds available, virtually doubling them from a general intensive care perspective.“[T]his will allow us to expand that and offer patients the opportunity of having critical care services when they are severely ill and reliant on life support devices. Many of those patients we are salvaging.”

“We also don’t have the same number of critical care beds and there is no single hospital in any major metropolitan area or even regional area that cannot function adequately without suitable critical care services,” Mer said.
