While the Eastern Cape government says it is sticking to its plans to vaccinate 3.7 million people in nine months, the national Health Department has refused to comment on the province's plans, and would not confirm if it endorses it. "At this stage the department is forecasting to have over 500 vaccinators to carry out this task," added Kupelo.

The province is one of the country's hotspot provinces with active cases standing at 7 018, while the death toll stands at 9 283. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced earlier this week that the country has secured 20 million vaccine doses to combat the coronavirus, which are to be delivered 'mainly' in the first half of the year.
