The SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) believes a proposal by the facilitator in wage negotiations in the municipal sector is biased towards the employer.

Samwu members had demanded a R4,000 salary increase across the board to ensure that the wage gap in the sector was narrowed and workers received decent increases. File photo. The SA Municipal Workers' Union believes a proposal by the facilitator in wage negotiations in the municipal sector is biased towards the employer.

The facilitator was asked, after the exhaustion of four rounds of negotiations on June 5, to prepare her proposal since parties were not finding each other at the negotiation table. Parties in the SA Local Government Bargaining Chamber have been given until June 22 to say whether they accept or reject the facilitator’s proposal.

“A 4% proposed salary increase is a direct spit in the face of municipal workers. This proposed increase means that the least paid municipal workers would receive a salary increase of R356 before taxation,” it said.

So be realistic, the economy grew at -3% over the last year, with many small businesses going out of business, government is running a massive budget deficit, a union can't just demand high salary increases during a pandemic year.

Wage increases cannot increase simply because inflation is higher - the economic growth has to be considered as the most important determinant otherwise wages will far outpace growth in production and services.
