Police found yet another baby abandoned on a pavement outside a creche in Delft.Most of the cases were reported in KwaZulu-Natal.
Delft police were doing patrols on the corner of Voorbrug Road and Akkerdraai Crescent, when residents flagged them down. "We are actively collaborating with the Department of Social Development to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to provide the best possible care and support for the infant," she added.
"It must be stressed that the Western Cape Department of Social Development does not want any baby or child institutionalised if there are other places of safety available for them, whether with family, a foster or safety parent," it said. She said that recent research had shown that around 3 500 babies were abandoned every year, and for every baby found alive, two were found dead.
Lucinda Evans, human rights activist and director for the Philisa Abafazi Women's Centre, said it was not the first time a baby had been found abandoned in the Delft area.
