More personnel deployed in KZN to provide humanitarian and disaster relief

The minister was briefing the media on Thursday on behalf of the justice, crime prevention and security cluster in response to the flood disaster in KwaZulu-Natal, and said it was “all hands on deck”.

The search and rescue team is made up of more than 50 experienced SAPS divers and more than 21 vessels, such as boats and rafts, to assist in the operations. Four bodies that were found with bullet wounds were reported as murders, while nine were found to have died from natural causes. He said the assistance rendered by the SA National Defence Force was executed under Operation Chariot, “a registered effort by the military to provide humanitarian and disaster relief assistance to all South Africans in times of need”.He said that, as the rescue and recovery efforts continued, more bodies were being discovered around uMzimnyathi, Hammersdale, Reservoir Hills, Hamburg and Henley Dam.
