In the latest episode, the woman who claims Masondo impregnated her and then forced her to have an abortion, has laid fresh criminal charges against him.
In the statement submitted to the Douglasdale Police Station in Johannesburg last Monday, the 31-year-old woman told the police that she was “an adult female studying towards an LLM [degree] at Wits University”. The woman, whose name cannot be published because the law protects the identities of victims of sexual offences, told the police that two days after she was arrested the senior prosecutor declined to pursue the case against her.
“For this reason, Masondo saw it fit to frame me for a crime in order to intimidate me from laying a charge against him and the doctor for the illegal abortion. His action [of approaching the Hawks on a false complaint] was inherently an act of intimidation aimed to silence me and force me to withdraw the HPCSA complaint at all costs after I made it clear that I would not withdraw my complaint,” the woman’s statement reads.
“First, he sought to pay in order to dissuade my family from seeking damages in terms of custom, which I rejected. Later, he sought to pay for my counselling, which I accepted. I had accepted such payment because he had in any case been paying for my counselling all along. It made sense to round off the figure and allow him to make a once-off payment [of R300 000],” the statement reads.
At no stage did I ever demand any reward from Masondo or state that, should he fail to pay such a reward“This was a false complaint, he unlawfully and intentionally made a false statement to the Hawks in order to intimidate me following my HPCSA complaint,” the statement reads.
