The MEC for Health in Mpumalanga has agreed to pay more than R15.7 million in damages to the mother of a 6-year-old boy who is blind after the nursing staff at the Witbank Provincial Hospital exposed him to too much oxygen when he was born.

Pretoria - The MEC for Health in Mpumalanga has agreed to pay more than R15.7 million in damages to the mother of a 6-year-old boy who is blind after the nursing staff at the Witbank Provincial Hospital exposed him to too much oxygen when he was born. Renier van Aswegen’s mother, Mary Rossouw, initially claimed more than R19m in the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria.

After he was moved to a normal ward, he continued to receive supplementary oxygen, until he was eventually discharged. The court was told Renier received supplementary oxygen after he was released from the intensive care unit without the doctors checking the levels of oxygen in his blood.

Slindelo_M Yoh.... Imagine all other millions settled out of court... Health is bleeding from these medical negligence cases....

I knew that the victim would be white even before I read the article. In SA justice is for those who have money.

SABPP1 That money should be taken from those who transgressed and they must be expelled and their licences revoked, not from public purse. That would be a deterrent. While I feel for the aggrieved family I don't see why should South Africans be punished for the sins of privileged few?

And at the same time, the Limpopo Department of Education is refusing to pay 3M for a child who died in a school pit toilet. Indeed, justice can see.

This is another reason why the National Health Insurance act must be implemented ASAP! When is CyrilRamaphosa going to implement NHI as PROMISED? The longer he delays, more poor people will die every single day Or must we wait ANOTHER 25years? sabcnews pravingordhan Health

mthombothi The problem is the MEC doesn’t pay the taxpayer pays and the incompetence continues

Too much of everything is indeed bad. ☹️

CoruscaKhaya If that money was used to fix this dump side this could not have happened.Even beatty clinic is better
