JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 30: Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rhulani Mokwena during the Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates joint press conference at Nedbank Offices on May 30, 2024 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Zungu, who announced his exit via social media recently, had been a pivotal part of the Sundowns squad last season, contributing significantly to their success.Zungu's professional journey included international stints with Vitoria SC Guimaraes in Portugal, Amiens SC in France, and Glasgow Rangers in Scotland, before returning to Sundowns for a second spell at the start of the 2022/23 season.
Throughout his two seasons back at Chloorkop, Zungu helped the team clinch two DStv Premiership titles and the inaugural African Football League, making 51 appearances and scoring once across all competitions. Mokwena emphasized that he has no control over player contracts, which are typically handled by the sporting director and the club's management.
“Sometimes in life you don’t get what you want and that’s the reality of the situation and football is even worse because you go to move on. As I said to you, after 24 hours you’ve got to move on to the most important things because my love for any player at Mamelodi Sundowns doesn’t override my love for the club. My love for the club and doing what’s right for the football club,” Mokwena further stated.
