France superstar Kylian Mbappe has now eclipsed Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo after reaching a new FIFA World Cup milestone with his brace against Poland on Sunday evening.
The reigning world champions marched on to the quarter-finals of the tournament after a comfortable 3-1 victory over fellow Europeans Poland, during which AC Milan centre-forward Olivier Giroud opened the scoring just before half-time to become Les Bleus' all-time leading goalscorer with 52 goals. Mbappe added a double in the second half before FC Barcelona marksman Robert Lewandowski scored a consolation penalty right before the end of the match.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward's two strikes took his tally at World Cups to nine goals, ahead of Ronaldo's eight. The 23-year-old has also achieved this feat across just two tournaments compared to the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's five participations at the competition since 2006.— UEFA Champions League , Mbappe also surpassed Brazil legend Pele for the most goals scored at a World Cup by a men's footballer before turning 24 years old, doing so with his first strike against Poland.
Mbappe's double also sees him equal club teammate Lionel Messi's nine goals in the competition, although the Frenchman has reached this milestone in 11 matches as opposed to the Argentine's 25 games at the showpiece.
