EFF leader Julius Malema has sent a stern warning to South Africans not to attend church services, describing them as “a trap”.

EFF leader Julius Malema has sent a stern warning to South Africans not to attend church services, describing them as “a trap”.Addressing an online media briefing on Thursday, the leader of the red berets encouraged people to pray in the comfort of their own homes, noting that their health would be at risk if they decided otherwise.

He then pleaded with churches to do what’s in the best interest of their congregants.“We would like to make a plea to religious leaders not to open their churches. We call upon religious leaders not to connive with white capital and risk our people’s lives,” Malema said.

His plea follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement on Tuesday that the nationwide lockdown regulations would be relaxed to allow places of worship to operate under level 3 from June 1.Read:However, only 50 people would be allowed per service, all congregants were advised to wear masks and adhere to social distancing rules.

We call upon religious leaders not to connive with white capital and risk our people’s lives.Julius MalemaThe announcement has been met with a huge public outcry.Social media users criticised government, saying the decision was irresponsible because it could lead to many deaths.

Malema gave an example of the church service held in early March in Bloemfontein in the Free State, which led to a high number of infections. The African Christian Democratic Party leader Reverend Kenneth Meshoe, MP Steve Swart and pastor Angus Buchan attended the service and later tested positive for the virus.

Other congregants who attended the church service at the Divine Restoration Ministries on March 10 and 11, were also infected.Malema said while he supported the ban of cigarettes and other tobacco products, it did not make sense to allow alcohol to be sold during level 3 of the lockdown because the implications could be dire.

He commended Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for her leadership style, especially regarding the cigarettes ban, saying that she had not allowed criticism to detract her.He slammed those who attacked her, explaining that her dislike for cigarettes was not prompted by the pandemic as she had always been against smoking. He suggested that South Africa would be better off without cigarettes.

Malema was hoping that Dlamini-Zuma could also fight the unbanning of alcohol sales as the EFF continued to lobby against the issue. He said white people only wanted the sale of alcohol to be allowed because they wanted to make profit and black citizens wanted it so they cam drown their sorrows.

He warned that hospital trauma wards could be inundated with patients if alcohol was permitted, taking up space made to accommodate Covid-19 coronavirus patients. We all know where Dlamini-Zuma comes from with her battle against tobacco. It’s a principled stance she has taken.

Julius Malema“Some of these people who were celebrating [the unbanning of] alcohol [sale] were at the start of the lockdown complaining that they didn’t have electricity or food. Alcohol must not be celebrated. We must never celebrate alcohol, it causes the spread of diseases, alcohol increases violence, alcohol destroys lives,” Malema said.

Malema announced that the EFF’s newly established labour desk would assist workers being mistreated by their employers as the country grapples with the pandemic.EFF national chairperson Veronica Mente and commissars Natasha Ntlangwini and Mpho Morolane would run the desk.
