In a major crackdown on counterfeit goods, the National Counterfeit Goods Unit, in partnership with several crime-fighting agencies, seized fake products worth R15.5 million.On Friday, 21 June, police executed a search and seizure warrant in collaboration with Gauteng Traffic, South African Revenue Services , Johannesburg Emergency Management Services , Brand Protectors, Crime Prevention Wardens, and private security companies.

They operated under the authority of the Customs and Excise Act 91 of 1964. Acting on intelligence, the team uncovered hidden storage facilities at the mall, employing specialized equipment to gain access. The raid resulted in the confiscation of over 18,000 counterfeit items, including shoes, sports apparel, handbags, caps, and perfumes. This significant haul is part of a broader crackdown on counterfeit operations in the area.counterfeit goods valued at R6.6 million

, followed by another operation on 7 June that netted R5.8 million worth of fake products. Combined with the latest raid, the total value of counterfeit goods seized over the past three weeks has reached nearly R28 million. Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk highlighted the success of these operations, stating, “This is the biggest counterfeit manufacturing plant bust in the past year.” The coordinated efforts of various agencies continue to make strides in the fight against counterfeit goods, significantly impacting illegal trade in Johannesburg.
