Census 2022 has faced difficulties, especially in the Western Cape where the response rate was lowStatistician General Risenga Maluleka wStatistics SA found it difficult to find enough fieldworkers to carry out the census due to the low rate of pay and the racial bias of communities, especially in the Western Cape.

"The white community does not want to be enumerated by coloureds and blacks. The coloured community does not want to be enumerated by blacks. And coloured and whites are afraid to go into black areas. We have never seen this. These are problems that the nation must address on another level." Stats SA head of communication on the census Ashwell Jeneker told MPs that “people were not prepared to work for R264.”
