LONDON - The British and Irish Lions will play Japan at Murrayfield in June ahead of their 2021 tour of South Africa, it was announced on Wednesday.
"A Lions Test is one of the most iconic events in world sport, but a huge number of fans from the Home Nations never get the chance to see one live. "They are a talented side who play high-tempo rugby, so it will be a good challenge for us ahead of the tour and a chance for the match-day squad to put their hands up for Test selection."Japan coach Jamie Joseph, Gatland's fellow New Zealander, said his side were well aware of the significance of a match against the Lions, drawn from leading players in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
The 2021 Premiership final means Gatland is unlikely to have a full squad to choose from for the Japan fixture, with some absentees possibly involved in the English season climax.
