Cronje argues the week’s events were not co-ordinated, but were organic and arose from stagnating living standards and draconian lockdown regulations

Our read of the relationship between living standards and protest action over decades informed our warnings to clients on at least seven occasions in the past 18 months that this blow-up was coming. Real per capita GDP has stagnated for a decade. The number of people with a job is barely more than when Thabo Mbeki vacated office. The proportion of young people not in education, employment or training is extraordinary. Most kids get such poor school results that they have no options in life.

Poverty is not just hunger, but also the inability to have nice things. You see the well-off own nice things that you can never afford and, year in and year out, nothing changes. You read of business and government plans and promises, and of how much better things are, when from your perspective they are not.

Are SA’s elites really so stupid to think — as their behaviour suggests — that this state of affairs could persist without an eruption? Or could they be so racist as to assume that poor black people will just sit and wait, like vassals, until it becomes politically opportune to get serious about raising the growth rate?

What a moment for theoristsCOLUMN: Explanations have touched on the wealth divide, economic decay and unemployment, failed service delivery, deprivation and hunger as well as long-standing racial and ethnic tensions. SAUnrest You left out tyrannical lockdowns - why? Yes, all theorizing and totally not appropriate. Community members must explain why the behaved like devils looting. They strolled home with the loot. Luxury 4 x 4 vehicles drove in and out of town to collect expensive loot. Bombing ATMs is not a spontaneous action. Food available for looters, and so sad that all rural areas around Empangeni now deprived off shops, etc. All looted! Don't blame others for the looting, and community must restore own dignity! Local GVT to assist rural areas, municipal structures still in place.

PODCAST | Unpacking SA's looting crisis: Would pardoning Zuma help or hinder efforts to bring calm to SA?This week we focus all our attention on SA's looting crisis and how it came about. Can someone tell me why police didn't use teargas to disperse looting crowds and use only rubber bullets? Teargas is more effective than rubber bullets but it was never used in all the TV footages i have seen.
