Late winner gets Netherlands off to flying start at EUROs

HAMBURG, GERMANY - JUNE 16: Wout Weghorst of Holland celebrates 1-2 with Matthijs de Ligt of Holland, Ian Maatsen of Holland, Jerdy Schouten of Holland, Nathan Ake of Holland, Lutsharel Geertruida of Holland, Stefan de Vrij of Holland, Cody Gakpo of Holland, Joshua Zirkzee of Holland, Donyell Malen of Holland, Xavi Simons of Holland, Tijjani Reijnders of Holland during the EURO match between Poland v Holland at the Volksparkstadium on June 16, 2024 in Hamburg...

Poland were required to early defending when goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny dropped to the near side to keep out a well-worked shot from Coady Gakpo two minutes in. As the intensity continued, the Oranje were rewarded a minute to the half-hour mark where a deft touch from Nathan Ake granted Gakpo to fire in off Bartosz Salamon.

With the first half lively, the second looked to liven up as Xavi Simons made a good forward to run to meet a layoff from Depay but he steered off the side-netting.
