In an affidavit signed on Friday in Durban, Shezi – a funeral parlour boss who is known to be one of former president Jacob Zuma’s chief supporters – submitted that as an ANC branch member, he had an interest in the outcome of the case.
He said he also had the support of at least 50 fellow ANC members from his branch in ward 41 in eThekwini region in KwaZulu-Natal who believed that the ANC’s revised step-aside rule that led to Magashule’s suspension was unconstitutional – as outlined in four of the five legal opinions the party had commissioned – and that ordinary ANC members were not consulted about the implementation of the policy, as has been promised.
