The duo announced their decision on Wednesday afternoon at a media briefing that was delayed several times.
The DA FedEx held an urgent meeting at the party's head office in Joburg, where it is understood leaders tried to convince the two to reconsider their decision or wait for the party's congress. Trollip, addressing the media following the meeting, said he was taking "full responsibility" for the findings made by the review panel appointed after the party's disappointing results in the 2019 general elections and was resigning.
Maimane in his resignation earlier on, said: "And in the end we have come to the conclusion that despite my best efforts, the DA is not the vehicle best suited to take forward the vision of building One South Africa for All.
