A member of Mamelodi Sundowns' 2001 CAF Champions League runners-up side has shared some memories of the final they played against Al Ahly and explained why the DStv Premiership holders have a better advantage than they did over 20 years ago.

John Tlale was in goal for Sundowns when they were beaten over two legs in the final of the Champions League in 2001, as Al Ahly showed their experience to overcome the South African side coached by the late Ted Dumitru at the time. Over 20 years later, the current generation of Sundowns players have become used to playing against Al Ahly, having faced the reigning Champions League winners in the last three editions of the competition.

"For us, back then, it was very tough. We were playing in front of such a big crowd and we did not even have one supporter on our side. So, it was difficult for us. This Sundowns team has more experience because every year they win the league here at home and go play in the Champions League where they play against opposition like Al Ahly. They've got a squad that can compete with any team on the continent," Tlale told Soccer Laduma.
