Power supply to business and residents in the inner city will remain affected until an assessment is done and a go ahead is given by emergency services to test and switch on

Felix Dlangamandla/Gallo Images/Daily MaverickThe exact cause of the explosion which sunk a huge part of the road at Bree Street, Johannesburg CBD and overturned cars and taxis, is not yet known, with investigations ongoing since the incident on Wednesday night.

Mangena added that there were huge amounts of water gushing underground starting to flood Johnware substation, which is about 4km from the explosion, towards Newtown. . Everyone from Sasol, Joburg Water, and City Power and experts from the department of labour had been roped in to conduct assessments on what may have caused the blast, and the extent of the damage. The department of labour said that the nature of gas when it explodes is similar to what has happened at Yeoville, and what is known is as tampon towers.

The DA caucus in Johannesburg has expressed concern over the lack lack of involvement of crucial departments in trying to get to the bottom of the blast.
