Asanda Ngesi had been admitted to Morningside Mediclinic in Sandton on a Monday evening last month when around 7pm, a doctor stood at her bedside holding a document written: “Covid-19 Contact Monitoring Register”.

Ngesi quickly sent a WhatsApp message to a group chat with her colleagues at Anova Health Institute in Johannesburg, informing those she had been in contact with that she was being tested for the novel coronavirus.

The doctor came back with a new form because they needed all the names of staff members at Anova Ngesi had been in contact with. She had also questioned why the manager wanted details on “the exact nature of the illness”, saying this was in violation of the National Health Act provision that “all patients have a right to confidentiality” and “it shows that you do not respect confidentiality of your own staff”.This comment is one of the charges against Ngesi for “insolence and disrespect”.

Allegedly, Ngesi only copied her manager in a later email sent to payroll that contained the doctor’s note. The alleged “private message”, according to WhatsApp screenshots that City Press has seen, happened in another chat group called the Anova Data Team in which participants made fun of Ngesi’s Covid-19 scare as she was coughing and she could not breathe. One participant said: “She is full of sh**.”
