The World Bank defines the goal of NHI as to ensure that citizens receive qualitative care without incurring undue financial burden. This implies that everyone has a right to access quality medical care regardless of financial position. This is a noble goal that should not be subject to debate. It is too obvious a cause. bill into an act is a milestone in South Africa democracy and needs all of us to combine our collective wisdom and make this initiative a success.
The ministry of health should, however, not be oblivious to genuine issues which are raised by different sectors within the national ecosystem. It is expected for different sectors e.g. business, labour, medical schemes, health professionals and political parties to have different views. This is part of power, territorial and ideological diversity which are expected in any democracy.
