Jan 19, 2022 - 08:00 pmBy Staff ReporterPremiershipVeteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is finally set to make a return to action this weekend after five months of inactivity at Kaizer Chiefs. It has been five months since Khune featured for Chiefs, but the voting system used for the new DStv Compact Cup has meant the veteran keeper is an obvious choice regardless of his current form or period of idleness.

The only appearance that Khune is sitting on for this season was in the MTN8 against Mamelodi Sundowns on August 15 when he conceded twice before Amakhosi lost on penalties. He was dropped from the matchday squad in the league opener at TS Galaxy, sat on the bench for the next against Baroka and has not been in the squad for 14 games in a row despite being available for selection.

Khune makes welcome return to Chiefs action Jan 19, 2022 - 08:00 pm By Staff Reporter Premiership Veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is finally set to make a return to action this weekend after five months of inactivity at Kaizer Chiefs. Scroll through the gallery below to see Kaizer Chiefs' top ten goalscorers in 2021 This has meant the 34-year-old hasn’t played a single league match this season with Daniel Akpeyi ahead of him while Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen provide cover. The lack of action has not diluted his popularity with fans giving him the nod for the Compact Cup. Khune has been voted to start for Warriors when they play Amabutho at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. He has faced a variety of challenges for the past three years related to both form and injuries which has limited his matchday contribution. His injuries were the reason the club brought in Akpeyi in January 2019 and the Nigerian has since played more even though he is not a favourite amongst supporters. Warriors will also feature Njabulo Ngcobo, Nlosingiphile Ngcobo, Njabulo Blom and Keagan Dolly in their starting line-up with Pirates providing Paseka Mako, Happy Jele, Thembinkosi Lorch, Deon Hotto and Kwame Peprah.   Thabo Matlaba, formerly with Pirates but now with Swallows, is the only player who is not from Chiefs or Pirates in the starting XI.
