Santaco said it was illegal to increase minibus taxi fare during the lockdown and said they would be engaging with the taxi association to reverse the decision.

Johannesburg - The South African National Taxi Council has said it was blindsided that taxi associations in Alexandra Township were planning to increase fares from R11 to R30 for the 'Alex to Sandton' route.

The Alexandra-Randburg-Midrand-Sandton Taxi Association and the Alexandra Taxi Association said on Sunday they would be implementing the new fares as of Monday, June 15. They added they had no choice but to take this measure, as it was the only way to remain operational, they said, citing government's 70% limitations on minibus taxis.

Molelekwa said Santaco would have a meeting with the association to discuss the issue and the proposed fare increase may not be implemented as planned. "It is illegal to increase fares during the lockdown even if it can be justified. We need to understand that the taxi industry is transporting people who got salary cuts and others lost their jobs

I own a restaurant , im losing.. who is not losing this time?

It is a good time now to introduce a BRT from Alex so that they can be outpriced. Fewer taxis on the road is good news.

But seriously how can the taxi industry survive with the new regulations without increase the fate...the gorvement should chip in instead of wasting more money on SAA and SA Express

I'm not surprized by this statement from Santaco. They seem to get orders from else where these ones. They can't be trusted though i agree with them on the timing but they don't offer solutions and are happy with black taxi owners eating crumbs. Government must subsidize taxis

This Santaco is a populist

So this Santaco will pay the instalments because Taxi finance wants their money regardless of Nationwide Lockdown. Santaco why don't you go to taxi finance and negotiate a debt payment holiday for taxi owners?

So maybe subsidies them. They can't carry a full load but will use the same amount of petrol and need the same maintenance done.. just a thought
