A family of four travelling to Cape Town can pay more than R30,000 for airplane tickets over the long weekend. | BISouthAfrica

Comair grounding: Here's why other airlines won't be able to plug the gap any time soon

Late this week you could still find return flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town for that family of four at just over R20,000 on Lift, but seats were moving fast. The drive is a long one – but it may actually save you a day or two of leave. By Thursday there were no flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town after work on 15 June, and almost none on Sunday. To fly you would have to take off the Wednesday at the least, and probably the Monday too.We were quoted R16,256 for our family to get to King Shaka airport via FlySafair, by far the cheapest option we could find. SAA and Airlink came in at just under R20,000, and CemAir at around R23,000.

The thing is, though, you can't fly to East London just for the long weekend. By late this week, return flights were only available for Monday, 20 June, and those seats were getting scarce too. And to fly out on Airlink would mean a very early flight on Wednesday morning.

BISouthAfrica Send the kids to grandparents and book an international trip. Can’t be paying such for local 😂😂🗑

BISouthAfrica The problem is, if you drive, the petrol price might increase before you get to each stop. Who knows, by the last stop it will probably be R30,000.00 a litre.

BISouthAfrica 😂 what are these people smoking?

BISouthAfrica Rather drive

BISouthAfrica Then just don’t go😡

BISouthAfrica rent*

BISouthAfrica One could catch a train, rent a sea side bungalow, for a month, work on line, enjoy the local scenery and restaurants and rent out your home in Gauteng, plus gain a few years of Life enrichment and not have to pay much more than that? No wander airlines are closing down.

BISouthAfrica Better to drive and save the money. It's shameful the way flying can be very expensive in South Africa. This is the time some other airlines companies can come to existence

BISouthAfrica We'll use brooms 🤷🏾‍♂️😂😂😂😂

BISouthAfrica Might as well buy the whole plane

BISouthAfrica 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Illegal dumping costs the City of Cape Town over R300m a yearThe City's solid waste by-law enforcement unit has already issued a total of 1 405 fines this year, amounting to R1,3 million. The COCT likes illegal dumping because it provides opportunities for awarding of tenders. Then charge rates and taxes to all dwellings, then people will learn to respect and protect their area. Easy come easy go. If you don't contribute to the services rendered, then you won't care about the environment. I get very disturbed when I see such on the streets😤
