A panel discussion looking into the newly signed electoral bill by President Cyril Ramaphosa that allows for individual candidates to stand for elections.

JOHANNESBURG - There’s been controversy and confusion around the new Electoral Amendment Bill that was signed into effect by President Cyril Ramaphosa last week, which allows for independent candidates to stand for provincial and national elections.

However, due to the fast-approaching 2024 elections, controversy surrounded the bill from many political heads. “The previous electoral system was clear and fair, with proportional votes reflecting the seats the party would occupy in Parliament. When you introduce independent candidates in the system which has been running since the dawn of democracy, you run into issues that are tough to solve problems, as it's not clear how the independent candidates would fit into that system.”

The Democratic Alliance’s spokesperson Warner Horn said the party’s position on the bill presented a missed opportunity for amendments in the way elections are generally run in South Africa.
