New Delhi - Police in northern India on Monday filed a murder case against a ruling party lawmaker accused of raping a teenage girl after a complaint by her family that he had attempted to kill her.
"We have registered a case of murder, criminal conspiracy against Sengar and nine more people in connection with Sunday's accident, following a complaint from her family," district police chief Sunil Kumar Singh said by phone. For most of the day, police had maintained that there appeared to be no foul play and preliminary investigations indicated that it was an accident.
The BJP, which also rules at federal level, came under attack, with opposition lawmakers accusing the party of shielding the suspect. The Indian parliament was briefly adjourned because of opposition protests over the issue.
