SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews says young defender Ime Okon will likely play in Europe next season. In January, it was reported that Okon had undergone trials in Europe.Matthews said both players could leave for Europe by July.
“Ime will probably make his way to Europe in July already because there is interest. With Shandre maybe after one or two seasons for but he will definitely leave SuperSport to play top-flight football in Europe,” he said. “He is good enough we have already had inquiries from top clubs in Europe … Champions League level. But Shandre is still young and still has a lot to learn in his game and still has to improve,” Matthews was quoted on“He started nicely, he’s scoring and making goals. He’s showing glimpses of what we know he’s going to become. I think Shandre will go on to be one of the best graduates from our development.
Okon has shown maturity and quality since his breakthrough into the SuperSport first team and could be ready for Europe. He even captained the club once this season during their CAF Confederation match. There has been speculation about his future international career, as he is eligible to play for both South Africa and Nigeria. The 20-year-old is yet to decide but should he move to Europe, Okon might look fancy Nigeria over Bafana Bafana.
