A total of 52 parties are aiming to secure National Assembly seats in what’s been described as the most competitive and most volatile elections since 1994.

JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa has warned that it won’t tolerate any breaches in the Electoral Code of Conduct as parties intensify their election campaigns.

With over a month to go to the May 29 polls - the electoral body is tightening its systems to ensure free and fair elections. Dozens of party leaders joined the electoral commission at the signing of the code of conduct in Midrand on Thursday.“The preamble to the pledge will read as follows: the elections require an environment where there is free political activity where all political parties are able to canvas support without fear or hindrance.

IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya says the code of conduct is binding on all parties contesting the elections. “Furthermore, certain behaviours such as inciting violence, intimidation, spreading misinformation or abusing positions of power are strictly prohibited and must be met with swift accountability measures.”
