How to avoid extreme health risks when lacing up for the Comrades | The Comrades Marathon Association said it had observed over time that many runners felt it was more important to finish the race than to be concerned about their health

The saying that prevention is better than cure aptly applies to all the hopefuls that will be on their marks in the Comrades Marathon on Sunday.

Key to the prevention are precautions that can help participants to avoid extreme risks, some of which could lead to death if ignored. Dr Phumelela Dhlomo, chief marketing officer at Gems, has advised runners to arrive at the race venue with plenty of time to check in, warm up and familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Dr Dhlomo’s advice on preparing for the ComradesAim for eight hours of sleep each night to ensure optimal performance. Listening to your body’s needs is essential, as sleep deprivation can hinder athletic performance.

Include cross-training activities in your routine to strengthen muscles not commonly used in running. Again, we will enforce the rule that any runner who is unable to move forward under their own power, will be prevented from continuing and medical attention will be called for, and that runner’s race will be over.
