Hout Bay residents displaced by a fire in the informal settlement of Imizamo Yethu have been left scrambling for shelter due to Covid-19 regulations closing City of Cape Town facilities. | nickymccain

On Sunday, a fire swept through the community at around 1:00, destroying around 80 homes and displacing around 300 people.

"Despite the damages and loss to property as a result of the fire, the fire was contained to one block only, and did not spread further and engulf further homes. The City, by mid-morning Monday, had already registered all persons, by name, ages and gender, and this database was given to Western Cape government social development, Sassa, as well as partner NGOs who started yesterday to deliver meals and food, and planned rollouts of blankets and other items," he said.

On Sunday, Quintas added that"due to Covid-19 protocols and policy, no City facilities can be utilised for immediate shelter". However, community leader Gary Krweqe said many of those who lost their homes in the fire were left with nowhere to go.There was nowhere for them to sleep. They had to make alternative arrangements or stay with friends. But it's difficult because there's Covid, and people can't be crammed into small spaces.
