Month-on-month the cost of the household food basket has increased by R140 or 4.4 percent.

Items in the basket include white sugar, cooking oil, potatoes, beef, and bread.

The Group's Programme Coordinator Mervyn Abrahams said it is usual to see an increase in food items in December and January caused by greater demand but this year there have been increases across all the food areas.Abrahams stated vegetable prices have been bumped up because growing conditions for farmers have been negatively impacted by climate change.
