Greenpeace Africa urges the South African government to prioritise renewable energy transition. Visit the link to read more:

Sibisi highlighted that thousands of South Africans lose their lives annually due to the direct impact of air pollution. The adverse health effects of burning fossil fuels and their contribution to climate change have been extensively documented.

Sibisi's comments follow the department of forestry, fisheries, and the environment's national air quality officer's decision to grant Eskom a postponement on the minimum emission standards for sulphur dioxide emissions at the Kusile Power Station last month. Although decommissioned in October, Komati is set to become the first coal-fired power station in Eskom's fleet to be repurposed into a renewable energy hub.

Eskom envisions that the Komati site will contribute approximately 370MW of solar, wind and battery storage power to the national grid in the next few years. Gordhan further expressed the need to explore new avenues for economic inclusivity, empowerment and entrepreneurship.
