Greece is a rare coronavirus success story but faces a huge financial hit without tourism

20 May 2020 - 05:05Beach umbrellas and sunbeds several metres apart, the end of the buffet bar and a place on every island for self-isolators — tourists travelling to the Greek archipelago this summer may find that the traditional package holiday has been turned upside down by the coronavirus crisis.

A Greek government ban on travel to the islands has meant that some of Europe’s most popular destinations have been deserted for the start of a season that powers much of the country’s economy. Now hoteliers are hoping things will turn around when Greece opens to visitors in early July.

OPINIONISTA: Coronavirus: Test the testing and if it fails, fix it — fastThe big issues facing our country are not illegal cigarettes, when we can exercise, or whether we can get warm food at the supermarket. The big issues are how to drive the reproduction rate of the virus below one. One part of the solution is the good practice of hygiene, physical distancing and masking up. The other part is testing, tracing, isolation, and hotspot management. The issues I have are SPECIFIC •Lack of food for starving •Abuse by law enforcers-visible for lockdown violations but not crime •Where tests being done •Test result delays •Domestic violence •WHO are NCC? •Peurile 'bans' that seem power related, with no evidentiary back-up
