Three are Grade 7 pupils, seven teachers, one principal and one office-based employee.

Spokesperson Elias Malindi said the affected schools have since been closed.

MEC for Education in the province, Maphefo Matsemela, said support would be offered to those infected. "Sadly, we have registered a sum of twelve confirmed cases of Coronavirus in our department. I take this time to pray for everyone affected by the virus a full recovery together with their love ones and I would also like to indicate that as the department will continue to render them our full support”, she said.

Mmatsema said the closed schools would only be reopened once they had been decontaminated by the guidance of the department of health.

Then my tweet was blocked when I asked mam Angie to confirm the rumours that 36 schools has been closed due to Covid-19 since the reopening on the 1st of June of which 7 are from Umlazi district 💔

Somebody needs to address the parents because the children that have been roaming the streets are the ones who do not want to wear their masks and social distance,they 'rev' the sanitiser stands,what must teachers do when they have subjects to teach?

This is totally BULLSHIT...all schools must close nd reopen nxt year January; all leaners must repeat their grades....including those at tertiary; they mst pay school fees frm where they left off dis year!!! We r being led by useless people in gov!!

Grade 7 pupils, teachers test positive for Covid-19 in North WestThe number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the North West education system has increased to 12, said the department. Is it possible to know how many of them are actually sick? As opposed to just infected? I saw this coming i wonder how many pupils are affected. This is so unfair to our kids.
