Looking over the fixtures in thefor the coming weekend, the one fixture that caught my eye in the TAB Soccer 10 pools on Sunday was my former club Orlando Pirates at home against JS Saoura in the group stages of the CAF Confederations Cup.
Now before I get into what happened, some people may say that bad preparation or planning would have prevented the things I’m going to tell you about. That is just not true. For every single away fixture I played with Bafana, I had a team around me and together we tried our best to plan for everything so that things would run like clockwork.
We sat at the airport for three and a half hours! After much moaning and hassling the airport authorities, we were allowed to leave the airport and we headed to what should have been a 60-seater team bus that had been organised for the trip. We got outside and were met from an official from the opposition who led us to what should have been our bus. We arrived at a truck where they started loading our bags, balls, medical bags into. And then two small 15-seater buses arrived for us to pile into.
I let the guys sleep in an extra hour the next morning before heading off to our training facility. On arrival at the facility, we found a pitch that hadn’t been cut in weeks, the grass was too long to play any football. There were huge holes in the pitch. It was unplayable. We did some stretching and some running but again not what we had planned to do and the preparation for what was the most important game of my and some of these players lives, was turning into a nightmare.
